Chris Matthews is an Auckland-based filmmaker and creative, drawn to storytelling through both moving and still images. For over 15 years he has worked as a Director of Photography across film, TV documentary, and commercials, bringing to every project the instincts he first developed working on set as a technician in the camera and lighting departments.

"I've always had a passion for photography. I started out shooting and printing black and white, Kodachrome. The film industry seemed like a natural progression."

After graduating from Victoria University with a major in Film and Psychology, Chris spent years working on local New Zealand films and TV shows as a camera assistant and gaffer, learning the craft from the ground up. That hands-on experience, across all formats, film and digital, and nearly every genre, has shaped him into a Director of Photography who is as dependable as he is passionate.
